Alexander Cockburn and Jeffrey St. Clair have a book out called "Whiteout" about the relationships of the CIA, the media, and the drug trade. In the past few days Cockburn/St.Clair have had three good articles on Gary Webb and the one yesterday was from Chapter 2 of their book "Whiteout." Cockburn gave a great display of his knowledge of the CIA in what I though was a masterpiece of an article a couple of weeks ago titled "Politicize the CIA?-You've Got to be Kidding!"
http://www.counterpunch.org/cockburn12042004.html

Yesterday they had an extended excerpt from the Cockburn/St. Clair book that came in two parts and was titled "CounterAttack- How the Press and the CIA Killed Gary Webb's Career"
http://www.counterpunch.org/webb12172004.html

On December 13th Cockburn and St. Clair presented their article titled "Trashed by the CIA's Claque-Gary Webb: a Great Reporter"
http://www.counterpunch.org/cockburn12132004.html

This weekend's edition has a Cockburn piece tiitled "From Kobe Bryant to Uncle Sam Why They Hated Gary Webb"
http://www.counterpunch.org/cockburn12182004.html

On December 14th, Richard Thieme wrote a piece called "That's What Kept Me Going- My Last Talk with Gary Webb"
http://www.counterpunch.org/thieme12142004.html

On the CIA and the drug trade there is one amazing fact that challenges all sensibilities- the CIA introduced the opium poppy to Afganistan. It is in an article at CounterPunch and cites a summary of Michael Ruppert's words on the subject-
http://www.counterpunch.org/cockburn09012004.html

"Before 1980, Afghanistan produced 0% of the world's opium. But then the CIA moved in, and by 1986 they were producing 40% of the world's heroin supply. By 1999, they were churning out 3,200 TONS of heroin a year – nearly 80% of the total market supply.

Remembering Gary Webb, his bulldog reporting

Mary Anne Sharkey

Like many of his newspaper friends, I was disappointed that the obituary on Gary Webb failed to capture his tenacious career in newspapers, particularly at The Plain Dealer. Webb was one of the toughest and best investigative reporters in a business that too often rolls over for those who are in power.

Webb went after doctors, governors, judges, politicians, cabinet directors and business owners. He was fearless in afflicting the comfortable. It would be hard to list all of the great stories Webb wrote, but a partial list would include:

Investigative pieces on the Port Authority and an insurance contract that led to the indictment of a board member; an examination of the Ohio State Medical Board and its failure to punish dangerous and criminal doctors that led to reforms still in place today; the coverup by Ohio State University of suspicious deaths linked to convicted serial killer Dr. Michael Swango; self-dealings by doctors who owned Medicaid HMOs that took huge profits while failing to provide basic patient care; abuse of power and accepting of suspicious campaign funds by Ohio Supreme Court members and staff; an exposé of a coverup of sexual harassment cases in a state agency that led to the resignation of a Cabinet director; investigations of inflated contracts for telephones and furniture awarded by state procurement officers; and a series on abuses in the state mental-health system (MRDD) that caused another director to resign. Only time will tell if he was not correct about a link between cocaine traffic and the CIA that caused him to eventually lose his final newspaper job. But it was a great privilege to have shared an office and a byline with Gary.

Sharkey and Webb worked in The Plain Dealer's Columbus Bureau in the 1980s.

"...When a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security."
- Thomas Jefferson, in the Declaration of Independence.

It is a moral value to provide health care. It is a moral value to educate our young people. The sense of community that comes from full participation in our democracy is a moral value. It is a moral value to make sure that we do not leave our own debts to be paid by the next generation. Honesty is a moral value.
- Gov. Howard Dean, M.D.

Morality is always the product of terror;
its chains and strait-waistcoats are fashioned by those
who dare not trust others, because they dare not trust themselves,
to walk in liberty.
-- Aldous Huxley

Hello darkness my old friend
I've come to talk to you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left it's seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains, within the sounds of silence

In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestones
'Neath a halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night, and touched the sounds of silence

And in the naked light I saw,
Ten thousand people maybe more
People talking without speaking,
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share,
No one dare, disturb the sounds of silence

`Fools', said I `you do not know
Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my word that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you'
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the well of silence

And people bowed and prayed
To the neon God they'd made
And the sand flashed it's warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said, `the words of the prophets
Are written on the subway walls, and tenement halls
And whisper in the sounds of silence'
