Not having complete control over your condition is part of the experience. Imagine if you could have absolute control over everything, wouldn't that be kind of boring? It's like cheating in a video game. It's those unexpected joys and pains that bring so much depth to reality don't you think? That experience of the spectrum, the sunshine and the rain, the day and the night. You may not have control over every condition, by you're an intricate, fundamental part of every condition, every aspect, every moment of your life. A slight change in your perspective ripples throughout your reality affected every last part of it. You are the ONE thing that's common about any circumstance and condition that may confront you.
Imo, it's your choice, your ability and power of mind, that allows you to choose if you want to have a circumstance sway you or not. I think of the disciplines of Buddhist monks and martial artists, mind over matter, these things. I also feel that by living in my own hands I'm living in God's as, imo, God and existence are one in the same.
