100 YEARS OF "JUST SAY NO" VERSUS "JUST SAY KNOW"

Reevaluating Drug Education Goals for the Coming Century
A particularly notorious example of this was the time Anslinger began to issue frequent press releases in 1935 that documented the horrible crimes committed by marijuana-intoxicated youth and/or addicts.
With headlines announcing "The New Narcotic Menace" and the "Crusade Against Marijuana," articles that contained remarkably similar accounts appeared in major newspapers and national magazines. T
his was hardly surprising, in that mainstream media relied almost solely on the Federal Bureau of Narcotics (FBN) for their facts, figures, and requisite horror stories (Becker 1963).
The success of Anslinger’s efforts in this particular instance was found in the smooth passage of the Marijuana Tax Act of 1937 by Congress (Dickson 1968; Morgan 1981)

Our Education: Up in Smoke!
Few American endeavors of the past two decades have been as rife with cronyism, corruption, and moral hypocrisy as our failed and futile War on Drugs. One can't just view it as a single issue. Directly or not, it affects every area of American life.

Congressman Fattah, President Clinton, and Congressman Mark Souder (R-IN) celebrate the signing of the Reauthorization of the Higher Education Act.
"When we got organized as a country and we wrote a fairly radical Constitution with a radical Bill of Rights, giving a radical amount of individual freedom to Americans, it was assumed that the Americans who had that freedom would use it responsibly . . . [However, now] there's a lot of irresponsibility. And so a lot of people say there's too much freedom. When personal freedom's being abused, you have to move to limit it."

Representative Mark E. Souder has earnings, debts from businesses
By Sylvia A Smith -Washington Editor
Fort Wayne Journal Gazette May 16, 1997
Aside from his $133,600 congressional salary, all the money Rep. Mark Souder, R-4th, earned last year came from the Grabill businesses his family owns. His debts are associated with the businesses, according to a yearly financial disclosure form he filed with the clerk of the House.
Souder reported he made two trips last year -- one overseas and one to Florida -- that he did not pay for. The U.S.-Thailand Business Council paid the bill for a 16-day trip to Thailand last fall, and the Council for National Policy paid for Souder's flight and overnight expenses to make a speech in Orlando in March 1996.

A group of active and former drug users in Thailand has organized in response to the deplorable health and human rights situation, in particular the current climate of fear caused by the killings. They have called for an INTERNATIONAL DAY OF ACTION on Thursday, June 12, 2003 to bring world-wide pressure on the Thai Government to put an end to this horror and to provide adequate healthcare for people who use drugs.. A list of their demands is posted on the web site of the Canadian Harm Reduction Network."
Souder received $1,370 as a partner in Historic Souder's of Grabill; between $201 and $1,000 as his share of profits from retail sales at Souder's General Store; between $5,001 and $15,000 in partnership interest from Historic Souder's of Grabill; $201 to $1,000 in interest from a certificate of deposit; and $201 to $1,000 in interest from a certificate of deposit he owns jointly with his wife, Diane.
House officials will release the reports next month, but Souder made his statement available early. The reports show - in very broad ranges - the sources and amounts of income, assets and debts.
Souder reported he has a 50.5 percent partnership interst in Souder's General Store, which is worth $15,001 to $50,000.
Souder also reported he owes 25 percent of a $10,001 to $15,000 mortgage on Historic Souder's. Lawmakers are not required to report mortgages on their residences.

Self Perpetuating Lies
President Ronald Reagan, at the urging of then Vice President George Bush, appointed Carlton Turner as the White House Drug (czar) Advisor in 1981. Soon after Turner left office, Nancy Reagan recommended that no corporation be permitted to do business with the Federal government without having a urine purity policy in place to show their loyalty. Carlton Turner became a rich man in what has now become a huge growth industry: urine-testing.
