FDA learns from DEA agent; shoots self in foot
Boy, I wonder if anyone at the FDA foresaw this. The FDA statement against medical marijuana has been received around the nation (and even the world), as if NASA had proclaimed that the earth is flat.

F.D.A. Misses Medical Benefit From Marijuana
Editorial: FDA Issues Report for Political Purposes*
Source: Daily Collegian April 26, 2006
Pennsylvania -- The Food and Drug Administration said Thursday that scientific research fails to support the medical use of marijuana. Forgive the skepticism, but why now, seven years after the National Academy of Sciences found marijuana rather, "well suited for particular conditions," should Americans question the legitimate uses of the drug?

UK: US Interest in MS Drug Boosts GW By Stephen Fole
Published: April 25, 2006 New York
US investors piled into GW Pharmaceuticals yesterday amid excitement over the prospects for an American launch of its revolutionary cannabis-based treatment for multiple sclerosis. Health regulators have sent an uncompromising message that smoked cannabis will not be approved for use by MS sufferers, leaving the way open for GW's under-the-tongue spray version of the drug. Justin Gover, the managing director, said GW'sshares had attracted attention from private investors.

Opium: An 1897 Bayer Heroin Ad
Heroin and Aspirin were both sold by Adolph Von Bayer and his company. Above link is a U.S. ad from 1897 it includes information about both Bayer Aspirin and Bayer Heroin. Aspirin and heroin were both legal at the time and heroin was marketed as a cough suppressant.
Bayer
German chemical and pharmaceutical company founded in the 19th century. Between the mid-1920s and mid-1940s Bayer was part of the notorious IG Farben along with BASF and Hoechst. IG Farben developed chemical weapons and used slave labour. At the end of WW2 several IG Farben executives were jailed for war crimes.
Bayer had considerable agro-chemical interests but no direct involvement in GM crops before its purchase of Aventis CropScience, from Aventis and Schering in 2002, to form Bayer CropScience. Bayer is the only large company to hang on to something approaching the life science concept, keeping agriculture, chemicals, polymers and pharmaceuticals within one company.

"Bush - Nazi Link Confirmed" by John Buchanan
New Hampshire Gazette, Oct. 10, 2003
In 1933, shortly after Hitler's appointment as Chancellor of Germany, the German Parliament was set on fire by the Nazis and the Communists were blamed for this act of terrorism against the German people. Following the Nazi-inspired arson, Hitler exploited the outrage of the German citizens to arrogate to himself dictatorial powers, which he promised would be used to rid Germany of Communists.
More recently, the U.S. government's response to a frightened and enraged U.S. citizenry over the September 11 attacks on the Pentagon and World Trade Center has been eerily reminiscent of Hitler's strategy' that is geared to exacerbate the reaction of fear and hostility and to put on a fast track three initiatives which bear an uneasy resemblance to the Nazi takeover of Germany

One-third of drug safety advisers in U.S. show conflicts of interest
Of the nearly 3,000 panellists appointed based on their drug expertise, 28 per cent disclosed a financial relationship with the company making the drug under review or a competitor, the consumer group reports in Wednesday's issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.
The FDA is not required to follow the recommendations made by outside experts on approving a new drug, although it usually does. The review of common conflicts of interest found:
* 19 per cent of consulting involved over $10,000.
* 23 per cent of contracts or grants exceeded $100,000.
* 30 per cent of investments were over $25,000

A history of deception
Andrea Barthwell is a former Deputy Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy, where her job was to oppose medical marijuana, regardless of the facts. The function of the ONDCP as charged by Congress was one of propaganda. In fact, the GAO said as much (pdf) in a reply to Representative Ron Paul who was complaining about incorrect information being disseminated by another Deputy Director:
"... while the Deputy Director's statements pertaining to marijuana may be disputed by some with different viewpoints, they were made within the context of ONDCP's statutory responsibilities, which include taking such actions as necessary to oppose efforts to legalize certain controlled substances such as marijuana. ...
Given this role, we do not see a need to examine the accuracy of the Deputy Director's individual statements in detail."
