I guess Richard Dawkins is the type of person you're talking about. He apparently feels the need to be quite 'evangelical' about atheism because he thinks it is at the very least a waste for so many people to devote their whole lives to demonstrably false, anti-intellectual or even damaging belief systems.
But atheism should not be lumped in as another belief system being preached. Atheism is
not a belief that there is no god, but a lack of belief in any particular god. There's a world of difference and many people don't seem to make the distinction.
Is it 'okay' to believe the tooth fairy will solve all my problems, as long as that belief is socially acceptable? What about when the belief is a little more imposing, like for example the belief that women are inferior to men, or that slaying people who don't believe what you do will get you into heaven?
What's wrong with pointing out irrational belief for what it is?
