United States men's national basketball team - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Quote:
Two years later, a second "Dream Team" competed in the 1994 Basketball World Championships, finishing first. That was the last time the collection of NBA players comprising an Olympic or World Championship team was officially called "Dream Team." However, the general public and the media continue to refer to every NBA-stocked USA Basketball squad as the Dream Team. In 1996 and 2000, the USA once again captured gold medals (No NBA-laden squad competed in the 1998 World Championship as an NBA lockout prevented its players from competing). The USA failed to medal at the 2002 World Championship, finishing sixth, and both the 2004 Summer Olympic team and 2006 USA World Championship Team both collected the bronze medal. The 2004 team lost three games on its way to a bronze medal, a record that represented more losses in a single year than the country's Olympic teams had suffered in all previous Olympiads combined. It was also the first time since NBA professionals became eligible that the U.S. men's basketball team returned home without gold medals.
