I think armpit rates pretty high up there on the scale of sucky arrow wound placement as well. Huang Zhong, a Chinese veteran general who lived about 200 AD and led armies into his 70's, died in the saddle from such a wound.
Come to think of it, Xiahou Dun -- a general from the same era -- got shot with an arrow square in the eye early in his career. Pulling the eye out along with the arrow, he is fabled to have swallowed it, proclaiming "blood of my mother, essense of my father: I cannot cast this away."
