What you're thinking about is probably hydrocortisone cream. I think you can buy it at 1 percent (perhaps twice that), over-the-counter. Benadryl cream is supposed to work about as well, but that hasn't been my experience with the cream formulation.
I'd recommend almost anything over the bear grease/licorice root stuff. Although licorice root is known to have anti-inflammatory effects, it's said to be dangerous to take if you have high blood pressure. But more than anything, I would really advise against going out and finding a bear and dragging it home, all just to render down that good ole' bear fat for the recipe. Most bears feel a certain attachment to that fat, since they need it for winter-time. They might even use harsh bear language to stop you.
But if you are dead-set determined to use genuine animal fat, you need not abandon all hope. I'll bet you could get some decent deer fat by sitting on the side of the road while the neighborhood deer try to figure out when to jump in front of oncoming cars. If I understand correctly, no license is necessary to verbally encourage them, like coaching them, you know: "..... JUMP NOW!... Not then, I meant THEN!... Tarnation, don't you do anything yer told??""
Bottom line is a solid grounding in deer psychology is useful in acquiring a decent supply of deer fat in the fall. (By the way, don't try this in the later winter, or you will just upset the skinny deer). And a garden with licorice plants in it. Or other kinds, if you know what I mean.... What, you think I'm being foolish? Not if you inhaled the vapors of whatever it was I did tonight.
Nitey-nite...
