It's the oldest rock found because most of the land masses 4.6 billion years ago have been melted miles below the earth's surface.

THe age of the rock depends on the type there are 4 main types.
Sedimentary rocks age depends on when it was lithified. (compacted and compressed) Metamorphic depends on when it was re-crystalized and igneous rock age is determined by when it solidified.
The kind of rock is definitely one way to guess how old a rock is, but different types of rocks are formed in different environments.
