Based on the formation and reformation of rock. The "rock cycle": Igneous rock is a partial melt which can freeze upon reaching air or water. This can turn metamorphic if it there is pressure+heat. Crystals can grow and regrow and basically recycle and reform. The oldest rocks are ones that have been stable and relatively unchanged in 4 B years.
