this may sound confusing, but think of it this way. when we are in this dense material incarnate world we perceive everything with our limited material mind and senses. what we perceive is not the ultimate reality, or everything there is. rather, such perception is quite limited.
through certain esoteric practices and purifications we can increasingly perceive the ultimate reality through purified spiritual or 'non-material' senses. this is our true, omniscient, spiritual self that is at one with the whole universe, has unlimited knowledge, and is unbound by all material limitations. by entering the ultimate reality, or astral/spiritual world we can access the minds and consciousness of all beings as one...ultimately everything exists in the universal consciousness.
...so i said that to say this: energy is best if taken in its purest form closest to the source. we can take it as pure sunlight or as plant-foods...especially fruit, leaves, vegetables etc.
psychics or people very sensitive to energy feel very subtle vibes and can take very specific information from it because energy and the universe is conscious and retains a kind of memory or subtle vibrations.
when one tries to take the suns energy too far from the source--ie animals--one must do all kinds of traumatic and violent acts to obtain it. that suffering, fear, pain, struggle, anger, aggression, and morbid death experienced by those beings is retained within the energy and flesh. ...the energy is thus polluted. we also are affected by the violent acts and willful malice itself...
when one eats such, that energy--polluted/tinged with suffering, fear, pain, struggle, anger, aggression, and morbid death-- becomes integrated into ones body, mind, and consciousness. it has subtle effects on your consciousness, growth, development, mind, perception, behavior, and ultimately our whole life path and karmic experience in the world. the effects are so deep and integral that it is very hard to realize. once our control center is thus affected, we have no other reference or control. we become 'lost' to it and 'taken' by that energy and the path it dictates.
thus it usually takes something profound to awaken one from such a path such as a traumatic experience, an enlightened being's help, some profound knowledge, even some fortunate association etc.
