The nomenclature has changed! When I was a kid the roach was as you say the un-smoked tip of the joint. We’d smoke’m as far down as we could and use a “roach clip” so we could burn them down as far as we could. What would not burn, the “roach” were often saved and re-cycled and re-rolled into a new foul-smoking joint.

But the days of the roach-clip are long gone. By using a piece of cardboard in the tip the joint can be smoked to the very end. There is no waste. If I’m rolling for myself I make them long, taking up as much as half the joint. After all, half the point of rolling with a roach is eliminating waste.
