I don't really dig the acoustic basses so much. They never really seem to have a great unplugged sound... unless you're looking at an upright, which you aren't.
Have you thought about an electric hollowbody? Those are pretty sweet. I think the $600 price range should get you something good. Ibanez does make good affordable instruments. Play whatever you can... you can always switch around a righty to a lefty, just gotta adjust the bridge and tension. Might have to deal with upside down tuners, but ya know, do what you gotta.
