Drew is right. Been there done that. My friend of a little over 13 years out of my 23 thus far will have died three years ago in two short months. It never heals, but it does get easier to deal with. Suffice to say I'm still finding my ways to deal with the repercussions and what it's done to my sense of mortality (torn it apart to say the least). Best of luck to you and I wish you all the luck in the world in dealing with such difficult circumstances.
