Beware of the same cheap move that the Catholic writer R. C. Zaehner tried to do: he argued that all versions of spirituality and mysticism, including psychedelics and including other religions, are inferior to the official Catholic brand of mysticism. If you want to make the old move of attempting to diminish psychedelic ego death and elevate Christian ego death above it and as opposed to it, then you have to sign on board to Zaehner's bigoted approach of elevating one particular brand of ego death against all other metaphor-systems that express ego death, which means putting down and diminishing the Buddhist brand of ego death, and Sufi Islamic ego death, and so on. Zaehner was open about his bigoted view: rah rah Catholic ego death, down with all the other teams, all other metaphor-systems.
Sure, one dies with Christ, in Christ, and is reborn with him -- this occurs through ingesting his blood, through which the Holy Spirit temporarily descends as an altered-state experience that induces permanent mental transformation. Christ's blood, drunk in the form of 'mixed wine', induces the kind of experiences reported for psychedelics. Christian ego death is essentially and functionally the same thing as psychedelic ego death.
