That drive down route 1 or 5 is really awesome for sure. That's a good loop to make just out of interest.
Van is wet. Mostly the dampnes makes it cold. There is something to be said about being able to walk outside anytime of the year you want. Some people like that proteptual dark haze the winter puts you in , for lack of sunshine.
I am 12 hours north of Van right now and this winter when it was -40 and sunny as heck I think I enjoyed that more than being damp, but I'm alittle skewed because I did landscaping in Van for 2 years without more than a week off each winter. Which means I stood out in alot of rain, crawled around in alot of mud and was always clamy in the gloves.
But its an awesome place. Living next to the mountains and the beach is awesome. And the city has a fairly small feel, which appealed to me. I was always seeing someone I knew, which is more funny to me coming from a town of 2500 and hardly seeing anyone I knew.
