Stoner is one of the dismissive terms used by people HATE us for smoking pot and believe we should all be in prison. Why not pothead, drug addict or druggie? They all are pejorative and imply a lifestyle. Like most cannabis users I only spend a minute fraction of my time smoking weed. Why should I let this tiny part of my life define me?
I am not a stoner, nor am I a pothead, and even though I do have a doctor’s recommendation to use cannabis, I do not even refer to myself as a medical marijuana patient. My responsible an infrequent use of cannabis does not define me anymore than eating bread makes me a bread-eater, or taking my dog for a jog makes me an athlete, or my prescription for Lipitor and low dose aspirin makes me a heart patient.
I do believe however, that a person’s overindulgence or dependence on any substance CAN define them. Just as someone who runs marathons has earned the title of “athlete”, so does a person who regularly drinks on the job and while driving has earned the title of being a “drunk”, and someone who goes through an ounce of weed as fast as they can may be termed a "pothead".
A six-pack of beer typically lasts about a month in our refrigerator, an ounce of pot will last my wife and me six months, but a half-gallon of ice cream will only survive for ten minutes in our house. I guess we all have our vices, and far more people die of complications due to cholesterol than Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol . So if I had to define myself based on my overindulgence or dependence of a substance, a more apt label than “stoner” for me would be “lard-ass”.
