the fact is that scientists are the ones who predict (and are usually right beyond a reasonable doubt) about things like ecological collapse, global warming, oil etc... this is not a debate, these things are scientific fact. an example is the collapse of the cod fisheries in the 50's. a scientist predicted exactly when the first fisheries would collapse and no one listened. and then they collapsed and many people were devastated. yet the worlds fisheries are STILL being overfished and people arent listening. it is not profitable to listen to scientists. in the case of the fisheries, how can you tell a fisherman to stop fishing? of course the fisherman needs to feed his family so he keeps fishing. this is the core problem, the people doing the damage dont want to stop unless it is profitable for them to do so. and our economy is fundamentally based on OIL. oil is linked to everything from delivery of goods, to transportation of people to their jobs, to airfare to agriculture. EVERYTHING is based on oil. if the price of oil goes up 10 percent EVERYTHING becomes 10 percent more expensive. oil will run out. this is fact, you can look at the charts of how many barrels are being produced and we peaked a long time ago.
the science has been completely taken out of the issue, because its not what the facts are, its how you can spin the facts. there is no spokeman for the scientists and the average person is not smart enough to understand or read or care enough to read scientific journals so the world will just believe whatever fox news tells them.
america could have/should have been worrying about oil for the past 50 years but rebublicans fought setting fuel economy standards and continue to do so. the shit has begun to "hit the fan" as they say as global climate change, rising fuel prices, economic collapse are becoming more and more obvious and are no longer just "debates".
under bush presidency all the scientists were told to shut up or lose their jobs. maybe now this might change because obama is not a dumbass (i dont think) but neocons are still arrogant ignorant fuckheads who will not listen to science.
but anyway, my whole point of this rant is that people are shortsighted arrogant ignorant assholes. scientists have known and continue to try and prevent and solve the worlds problems but until people start listening to scientists nothing will improve and it will continue to be a dinner table debate and nothing will be done.
