I have learned in my experience as an activist that the REAL change needs to come from the grassroots up. I must admit I was naive for a minute. For example, while it's true that Obama, during his campaign, did not support legalizing recreational cannabis, I really thought that he just MIGHT take the idea more seriously after it was the no. 1 rated idea on change.org and change.gov. I thought to myself, "President-elect Obama, the people are speaking! Please respond accordingly!!!" And when we received the huge blow-off that we did, boy was I disappointed.
I have no wish for a 1776-style revolution, I just wish that the masses really cared about "the issues" and got out into the streets to peacefully demonstrate by the thousands. Anyone remember Michael Moore's footage of French protestors in the Sicko movie? American protestors hardly ever get out by the dozens of thousands like that, on such a regular basis. No, America has that kind of passion for lining up outside Wal-Mart at 5 a.m. the day after Thanksgiving and actually knock down the doors before the store has opened, only to trample an employee to death. So in a weird way, these anti-Obama "tea parties" make me say "good for them!" even though I know that many of those people just dislike Obama in a partisan, Limbaugh-style way, not for the same reasons why I harbor skepticism towards Obama.
