yes this is gergor mendel type stuff. the chromosomes from mom and the ones from dad will give the genotype, and how the genotype is expressed in the environment, or you could say as a result of the environment or in reaction to it - thats what make the phenotype
if you look up punnett squares it will all become clear(er), al least as a way of thinking about how pairs of genes can express thenselves
