Keller Williams>Drum and Bass 3/27/09
After working on the farm for a few hours during the day I managed to scrape together$80. I went to Salem to meet up with my friend Kyle at his workshop. He grabbed a couple cases of his glass art and we drove into Boston, where we met his sister on Newbury Street (she needed the car) Kyle had his long board and I was on foot so we took off to find the nearest subway. After a couple of cops gave us bunk directions, we decided to hire a pedi cab (a small cart pulled by a bicycle). As soon as we pulled up to the venue (Paradise Rock Club) some one asked if we had extra tickets. I wasn't expecting the show to be sold out and we had no tickets at all.
We decided as long as we were there we could try to sell some art, so we popped open the cases, Kyle posted up and I started walking up and down the block looking for extras and trying to get rid of some glass art. There were about 30-40 other people all walking the block trying to find extras and a few of them took a look at the case. The bouncer told Kyle he had to move so he and another kid who was selling crystal wraps moved in front of the Goodwill. I found some one with one extra who said he wanted to trade for glass so I brought him back to Kyle, but the guy changed his mind and said he wanted to trade for drugs. Of course we didn't have any so we told him glass only but he wouldn't do it.
I kept walking the block and heard people offering $100 for the $27 show. Then a dude in a skullcap and radio came over to me and asked to see my case so I showed him what I had. I knew kyle needed between $10 and $35 back per piece, depending on how intricate they were. He admired the Seahorse and small fish I had but landed on the simplest piece in the case. I told him the price and he said "I don't have any cash but I can get you into the show" I said "How are you gonna do that?" and he said "I'm the tour manager." so he ran onto the bus to put the piece away then took down my name and handed it to the bouncer. I was a little dubious at first, especcially since he was asking to keep the cases on the bus for the whole show, but Kyle just went to his friend's house down the street and dropped off the case.
It's always an amazing feeling when you finally get a ticket in your hand, but this was the best thing that's happened to me at a show in a while. I walked up to the box office, gave her my ID and she handed me 2 tickets. I felt like Charlie unwrapping that golden candy bar. We walked in and got our hands stamped and went into the show. I was kind of hoping Molly had made it to the show but only one of her less attractive sisters was there.
Keller did an amazing show, playing 'best feeling in the world' 'Novelty Song' 'Brokedown Palace>Women are Smarter' and closed with 'What I got' by Sublime, a song I'd never heard him play before which was an awesome cap to the evening. I knew all along that I had work in the morning but had decided I was going to stay up and just catch the first train back home around 6AM. Kyle brought me to this awesome warehouse jamspace where there was a good sized kegger/ live drum and bass show going on. The packy's were closed so I gave my donation and started hitting the keg. Then I noticed a couple of recent acquaintances from Salem were there. It turned out Conrad had a car and was heading back to Salem early. I bought him some breakfast and tossed him some cash for going out of his way to my house and got home by 10:30 (when I was supposed to be arriving at work) I called up to let them know I was gonna be a little late, showered shaved and got ready.
So the night ended for me there, in my shower with the morning light already bright in the cracks of my windows. I went to work, stayed the whole time and made a little loot. After work I went over my friend Nick's house to hang out and ended up teaching his 4 year old step son how to count to 5, which was a long and frustrating ordeal since Nick's GF just recently had a baby. The 4 year old was feeling jealous and admitted to me that he thought "If I can count to 5 I'm not the baby anymore" I told him that was fine and it was more fun being a big kid anyway and he finally managed to get it right. A good cap to an eventful 2 days. I headed home and slept like a log for about 12 hours.
It was awesome, every moment of it, especcially knowing that keller would later see the art my friend had made that got us into the show.
