There are good and bad witches some born into it

Yes, I understand.

My friend practiced the craft for cleansing and just reverance of nature.

Natural Rituals like The Cirlcle of Power and Raising the Cone of power from The Cirlcle of salt on the ground.

There are several grimoirs that link Freemasonry (handshakes and passwords and DEGREES)
The craft was passed down from italian families using freemasonry as a 'conduit' or Freemasonry was using Witchcraft.

It could be either way, or both.

Hereditary Witchcraft: Secrets of the Old Religion

HEREDITARY WITCHCRAFT, by Raven Grimassi, explores the beliefs and
practices of Witches who have passed their ancient Craft from generation to
generation. This book provides sound evidence for the existence of Family
Traditions still thriving in the late 19th century, and up into modern times.
The book also clearly demonstrates that the Old Religion is not something
that began with the writings of Gerald Gardner. Of special interest is a
section comparing the various aspects of Gardnerian Wicca with the earlier
tenets of Italian Witchcraft revealed by Charles Leland. Here one discovers
that almost every aspect of modern Wicca appeared over half a century
earlier in Leland's works on Italian Witchcraft. This is a ground breaking book
with a lot of material and symbols never before seen in print.

The book also ties in Freemasonry with The Craft.

Witches use cats, snakes, and owls, because they bring dead animals back to the house to be used in spells.

Ever have your cat bring you a dead mouse?

It's called a "Familiar".

From the same guy Raven Grimassi
