I'd say it's not your lack of understanding a woman's psychology, just your lack of understanding much about labor and birth.
Also, FYI, alot of times, it's just a trickle, especially at the begining, not a gushing tidal wave of fluid.

Indeed. my wife's water broke at like 6 in the morning on a thursday, and the boy wasn't born until just after 5 pm the next day.
