while i agree with the first paragraph, and i think there are too few artists that don't stick to any genre, i don't think any truly 100% creative artist builds off any genre.
i think it is completely possible, as long as you don't have any structure in mind when creating, to create new styles and structures. as soon as you have a particular style in mind, you are going to lean toward and build off of that. to me thats not being creative, thats modifying what someone else has already created.
imo to be truly creative you don't start with any style/structure, you just start from whatever is in your mind
