When I lived in NY, there were mosquitos that you could saddle and ride around on.....that being said, my Grandmother used to mix some baking soda with a little bit of water, until it had a pasty consistensy.
When it was applied to a fresh bite, it would dry and draw most of the mosquito saliva out, and it made life in the summer a lot nicer.
