Who's Funding Calvina?

Who's Funding Calvina Fay of Drug Free America Foundation?

$1.2 million in receipts for 2003, of which about $900k was government grants.

Drug Free America Foundation,
formerly known as Straight, Inc.

From 1976-1985 it was known as Straight, Inc. and had a reputation for abusing kids as a drug rehabilitation program. In 1985 it changed its name to Straight Foundation, Inc. in order to protect its money and its principals from civil suits. In 1995 it was changed again to Drug Free America Foundation. DFAF is a national and international drug policy think tank and provider of services for drug free work places.

Betty Sembler elected to Florida Women's Hall of Shame, uh Fame

On Monday, January 5, 2009, Florida Governor Charlie Crist inducted Betty into the Florida Women’s Hall of Fame for her work at Straight, Inc. and for her service on the board of the Florida Governor’s Mansion Foundation. Betty's son Brent, who is vice chairman of the Sembler Company, was Finance Co-Chairman for the campaign of state Senator Charlie Crist. He also served on committees for the election of Charlie Crist for Florida Education Commissioner, for Crist's bid for Florida’s Attorney General and for Crist's gubernatorial campaign. It was son Brent who inspired Mel and Betty to found Straight when, as a teenager, they placed him in The Seed (Straight's predecessor) which was accussed by the US Senate of brainwashing kids. There is even speculation that Charlie Crist was in The Seed with Brent.

Drug Free America Foundation
It is currently led by Betty Sembler and Professor Calvina Fay.

Is your organization supported by government grants or privately funded?

Drug Free America Foundation was founded by Ambassador and Mrs. Mel Sembler through private means and now performs special projects, drug abuse education and prevention and drug free workplace programs through tax-deductible contributions as well as federal grants and contracts.

Does former ONDCP advisor Calvina Fay run most of the groups supporting Citizens Protecting Michigan's Kids?

Drug Free America Foundation…
a propaganda-generating tax shelter.

A brand is a powerful thing, and sounding “official” is all it takes to be official in the eyes of many. According to an ABC news poll, about 4 in 10 people in this country trust the media. The same margin believes that marijuana should be legalized according to another poll by zogby. The same ABC News poll trusted the government at a rate of about 1 in 4. In what world could that possibly mean anything good about the behind-the-scenes politicking, or the ultra-cut news media.

Calvina Fay vs. The New Drug War Politics

The Drug Free America Foundation’s perpetually panic-stricken director Calvina Fay gave a speech at the World Forum Against Drugs that was so over-the-top crazy, I wish more people could have heard it. Pete Guither recounts and refutes it here, so I’ll call attention to the one thing she said that is actually truthful

From the Daily Show:

Calvina Fay - Drug Free America Foundation: "You can't have people going out and selling anything and everything and declaring it a medicine. Where do you draw the line on it?"

Jon Stewart - Daily Show Host: "I tend to draw the line at what my doctor's think will work. Or I ask a spokeswoman for A Drug Free America. I feel them equally qualified when it comes to my health."

Allen St. Pierre - NORML: "Most people almost certainly believe that if you could have cocaine, morphine, methedrine, and oxycontin prescribed to a sick, dying and sense threatened person, you could probably have marijuana prescribed as well."

Former anti-marijuana lobbyist switches sides

Now, he’s ready to lobby for allowing medicinal use of marijuana, and do anything he can to support it. “Being away from the Drug Free America Foundation allowed me an opportunity to take a fresh look at the issue,” Krahl said. “I don’t have skin in the game anymore.”
