They have a taste for the theatrical, using symbols and concepts to entice Gotham residents (whether that be the demented, criminal underworld or the ordinary, innocent citizenry) to their side.
They both also have incorruptible philosophies: one plays with absolutely no rules, tries to "upset the established order" and believes that human life has no cost; the other has a strict set of rules, and believes the preservation of human life is the most precious of all principles.
They played up the similarities in The Dark Knight and the 89 Batman movie by having Batman or Bruce Wayne do something and then later when the Joker was in the same area he would do or say the same thing... like Batman came into an apartment was was like "Nice room there's a lot of space" and then later the Joker said the same thing(89). Or when Bruce shows up at Harvey's party, he says "Where is Harvey Dent?," and when he goes out on the balcony, he spills the drink out instead of actually drinking it. When the Joker arrives, he asks the same question and later he spills the drink out of the glass he grabs.
They are two sides of the same coin, socio/psychopath, alone, victims of society, etc...
