Question about young, leggy plants...

I've read several posts in which a grower is having problems with leggy plants. And, it brought to mind the following hypothetical question. Assume that a person were to initally plant seeds in small containers such as yogurt cups. Then, suppose that before they were big enough to transplant, the plants got leggy. When the plants are transplanted into larger pots, would it be best to burry the plant a bit deeper than it was planted in the yogurt cup? If so, how deep could one bury the leggy plants without hurting them?

Thanks for taking time to look. And, thanks in advance for any information you are willing to share with me!!
