How can you not? When a rapper writes lyrics about current events I am both intrigued and enamored in their perspective. They are great social commentators. When Green Day writes about the same event I'm neither suprised nor entertained. When Mr Lif. drops his 2 cents on the war in Iraq I am all ears. When Bright Eyes whines his protest song out it sounds cliche or at best a tribute to topical songs of the past.

That is not a measure of musical talent, or integrity, just a measure of how well you can market your music to the masses, which I know you agree with, as you acknowledge most popular music isn't good music. So therefore, shouldn't really be a measure of how 'good' a genre or artist is at all really.
