The Earth bobs up and down through the galatic plane in a roughly 30 million year cycle. Extinctions seem to happen on roughly a 30 million year cycle.
And we are right at the due date for the next one.

NASA found out in the beginnings of the space program that pens would not work in space. SO NASA spent millions of dollars and a good year and a half developing a pen that does not need gravity to draw the ink down.
The Russians just brought pencils...
