..well more like 200 kms north. The beaches are to die for (surfest starts there) and even yesterday it was a tranquil 28 C, and 17 in the water. And thats in the winter! On the (Fear) T.V. they talk of el nino and Carbon Trading Schemes till care factor zero and the channel is turned to the new free digital format: Baseball.. Yankees vs Boston (I think), with a trouncing dished to the yankees. but i digress...
BACK IN NEWIE... Weed is smoked reasonably freely across the town; their paranoia placated by the fact that police are more interested in stopping graffitti than raiding you for your quarter. And even out on a friday and saturday night, now with the smoking laws that encourage loitering on the streets smoking, you can *-DisCRETELY-!* indulge in a lovingly pre-rolled joint away from the crowd, as long as youre prepared to share it with whoever sniffs you out. Bribery is alive and well.
So too is the bong. Stashed under sinks, in laundry's, tactfully disguised as ceramic mushrooms, flat out plastic bottle on messy ciggeretted tables, and most definately hidden in bottom draws missing the bottoms.
Those that don't indulge usually have the experimental phase more on the upper side. With clubs around the town sporting names like PING STREET HOTEL (that would be King st Ht) and E! (actually known as 'G' if you could bet any more blatant) it is no wonder that there is a well earned reputation for takin it easy and genarally being jovial and 'how's it crackin'?'.
Even though we are the second or third hardest working nation on the planet hours worked per week/ holidays taken. Stressful stuff, better go and have a beer down the pub, yeah? And just before this piece becomes a rant down at that pub: there are more poker machines in New South Wales (state) than in Las Vegas!
F**K'n Hell
