my sis just got back from a backpacking trip in Europe she travelled to 10 countries in 4 weeks including Netherlands. She spent less than $5000,. Its all about finding the best deals. Stay in hostels, travel with other tourists so you can split costs or couch surf (couchsurfing.com) lol. it worked for her.
edit: all of this included a two way plane ticket from Toronto and a Eurorail pass to travel anywhere in Europe.
edit#2: she also said that amsterdam was dirty and she will never go back lol
