It can effect if by slowing things down and even burning it. I have had this problem before and it burnt part of the top bud all brown.The lower portions are fine but the parts too close can really get messed up.
You say its all ready tied down as much as possible. Can you tie it over to the side?
This is what I do if they get to big.

If you do this be careful not to over do it and break it. You can tighten it up a little at a time every couple days. If it is heavy and seems like it could break use a line to support it up top.
