Do we have to have references and proof to believe something true?

When it refers to a book, yea. Especially when I comes from the Bible, the most studied document in the history of the planet. Like most books, it is made of words, among then "calamus" found in the Old Testament, which may or may not refer to cannabis, depending if you are reading the comments of a linguist or a theologian with an ax to grind.

physical truth is objective. The world of ideas (words), however, is a slippery, subjective mess. That being said, words can be corralled into fairly narrow meanings based on context and general usage. Or, going back to the original question of Christ using cannabis based on the words written in the Bible, I doubt it.
