it's not a watered down mpc at all. i also have an mpd usb, and with the mpd and the xr, i can do all the same shit PLUS sample the sounds from my XR20 to my mpd-- and i think i spent around 500 on the two of them, whereas you'll pay upwards of 700 for a new mpc. for straight up making loops though, the xr20 is an awesome awesome AWESOMe machine. like if you're thinking of getting an mpc, i'd rather get a fantomS for my money. i miss mine. you can do absolutely everything on it start to finish.
with the xr20 you can build songs too. the step-edit is fucking awesome.
it all depends on how you make your beats. if you're purely sample based, then go with an mpd and get a keyboard you can hook up to it. if you like builing your own beats and shit from scratch and then adding samples onto that, go with the xr20 and then you can sample from dvd or just wavs or mp3s on your computer. the only thing limiting what you can do is your creativity.
