Guys this is not getting us anywhere closer to having a moon base. The Project Constellation missions won't even be manned until 2014. And the first flight with a purpose other than testing won't happen until 2015. And these dates are
IF they're able to stay on schedule. Which NASA is notorious for being unable to do.
Odds are they won't even finish construction on one until the mid to late '30s.
However, GH, you're mistaken when you say the base wouldn't be worth the cost/effort in terms of knowledge and whatnot.
A base in the 1/6th gravity of the moon would be great for science.

People say that space exploration needs to be privatized, but really without the government being first to take each major step, odds are we'll stay on the ground for much longer than we need to or could do.
