I didnt say anything because they were giving us as much absinthe and rum as we wanted. I could probably chill with Stalin and Kim Jong Ill if I was drunk enough, plus a friend's new love interest took us and she modelled for some of the paintings and it just seemed like a bad idea haha.
And I'm aware that the L.A. art scene is laughed at. It's sad because there's actually really good artists out here who live in studio apartments and hold day jobs. The best art out here is the amazing pieces of graffiti and random street art. A lot of the tagging is just bullshit, but there's huge patches of really detailed beautiful pieces of graffiti from hollywood to long beach.
And the area is really bigger than people seem to realize. Los Angeles county stretches almost down to long beach at the south, venice and santa monica at the west, highland park, city terrace, glassel park etc. to the east and Santa clarita/san fernando valley to the north. There's a vast difference between an artist from Van Nuys and an artist from Pacific Palisades (besides 30+ miles).
But overall the art that gets put in places like LACMA is really kind of lame. It's usually a either anime-ish, collage-ish, abstract-ish etc. You may get a couple really good Warhol ripoffs, but I don't remember the last Escher or Dali that came out of L.A. (atleast not any of the nicer areas).
