What is vegetative growth?
This is the period of growth between germination and the beginning of sexual maturity characterized by flowering.
Growers generally use either 18 hours of light and 6 hours of darkness or 24 hours of light during this period.
Most strains can be grown indefinitely (within reason) in vegetative growth as mother plants. However, Cannabis IS an annual and many plants will try and flower or at least degrade after a year or so of growth so be aware.
What lighting cycle should I use for vegetative growth?
Most growers use either 18 hours on / 6 hours off, 20 hours on / 4 hours off or 24 hours on and 0 hours off.
Many growers prefer to give an off period to increase the service lights of their lamps and decrease the electricity bill, however there may be more scientific reasons why a night period is beneficial, starch may build up in the plants chloroplasts making them unable to effectively photosynthesis until the starch is able to be broken down during a night period. There is a lot to be said generally for a night period. The garden and it's components can cool off, plants can recover under less stressful conditions, a lot of root growth occurs at night as well as top growth, oh, and mother nature gives her plants one.
