i believe we have a psychological construct called ego that we have adapted into a basis for our sense of identity, and that this has been reinforced generation to generation on down the line from our primitive ancestors. for them, matters of self and survival were one and the same. the stronger an ego one could maintain, the more fit he became to survive. this is the paradigm through which society and civilization have developed, right up to this day. it is deeply ingrained in our collective psychology, and on both personal and collective sides it is armed with a series of learned actions, reactions and impulses.
this is not a foe to be taken lightly, and i believe with all my heart that the seemingly tiny steps we've taken along the painstaking course of our evolution beyond it are veritable leaps and bounds!
