What's usually at parties is fairly inexpensive, on average. Nobody should feel perpetually entitled to exemptions for what they consume at social events. As the creator of the event, one should expect to dish out for mild expenses (food, booze, whatever) toward some party essentials.
A "Bring ___ or you don't get any of ours!" mentality makes BYOB seem like it stands for "Buy Your Own, Bitches", and in poor taste (guests are often more willing to help a generous host).
