To answer your questions, yes the lighter is actual size.

The general idea is just to get as much light to as many future bud sites as possible. The simpliest way to do this is make your plant wider so more the growing tips get a good amount of light.

The height is ultimately dependant on you (as well as genetics), work by the rule of thumb that the plant will at least double in height from the height that you iniate flowering at so if the plant is 8 inches tall when you start the 12/12 lighting cycle then it will finish at 16 inches or a little taller.

As for the side with the most sidebranching, that's not deliberate though I do tend to tie down with the most developed side branching at the top. Regardless of how you tie them down the growing shoots will readjust themselves to grow upwards.

It is possible to tie from seed though the slight worry is that you spend an age training a plant that turns out male. Further to this seeders are more delicate from the outset so you may have to wait a little longer before starting to train them.

If germinating for hydro use then rockwool or Oasis is a good way to start. I use dirt so germinate straight away in pots, I have germed in Oasis once or twice but found no real advantage to it, in actual fact I would possibly say thay germing in rockwool/Oasis is slightly trickier as water retention can be very high and you may overwater and drown the seedling.
