Depp and Del Toro plan more fear and loathing

Depp and Del Toro plan more fear and loathing

Staff and agencies
Thursday September 18, 2003 Johnny Depp and Benicio Del Toro are to collaborate on an adaptation of the Hunter S Thompson novel, The Rum Diary. The pair last teamed up as the stars of Terry Gilliam's wired 1998 adaptation of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. But their return trip to Thompson's work will find Del Toro juggling his supporting role with a behind-the-scenes seat as the film's director.
Regarded as "the lost novel" from the infamous Gonzo journalist, The Rum Diary was written in 1959 when the author was just 22. Its semi-autobiographical plot charts the fortunes of a wannabe New York writer who takes a dead-end job on the San Juan Daily News in Puerto Rico and charts his (largely unsuccessful) battle with the bottle and his run-ins with the local people. Reprising his turn in Fear and Loathing, Depp will take the lead role as the tale's Thomspon-esque hero, Paul Kemp. The film will also star Josh Hartnett and Nick Nolte.
Gilliam's madcap take on Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was a critical success but a box office failure. Since then, however, its stars have gone from strength to strength. Del Toro won a best supporting actor Oscar for his turn in Steven Soderbergh's Traffic and will next be seen in 21 Grams, the second feature from Amores Perros director, Alejandro Gonzales Inaritu. Depp, meanwhile, recently topped the US and UK box office with Pirates of the Caribbean.,00.html
