it's powerful to be able to create things of such beauty as cut stones

the fascination to me, is in the nature of different stones, I've just figured out some ways that let others admire their natural beauty.

amazing roach, i was thinking solely of gems, thanks for the illumination.

i've been polishing rocks for months trying to achieve that-my grandmother has some post-lapidary stones I got when she died-and your pics just lit the path I need to walk in order to achieve what I set out to do so many rock polishes ago. I'd figured they'd just been tumbled in a specific polish, and I was seeking that out.....but now....i need to learn a new skill

but really, thanks, amazing post, amazing talent. Amazingly humble. Good stuff.

Very cool, kind of amazing that something you'd be pissed off by if you saw it on the street can become so interesting just due to the effects of water.
Definitely worth making some sort of stained glass/mosaic type thing.

I can't help thinking that the sticky white/orange one looks like a half chewed haribo!

Not a single drop of those are my own. I just raided Pinterest for a nice selection of photos so I could post some eye candy for my ocean-loving friends at Yahooka.

How long does it take to smooth out the rough edges?

with glass and in a tumbler using a mix of 90/120 grit only a few days.

then a few days of 220 grit

few days @ 600 grit

then 1200 grit a few days...some folks go straight to polish after 600 grit.

then tin or cerium oxide (polish) for several days to a week.

hard materials like tourmaline, agates, and smoky/rose quartz take longer for each grit cycle.

and YAG (Yttrium aluminium garnet ) (fake diamond) I did this one time and it took forever.

by grit I'm talking silicon carbide.

it's cheap on ebay.

for hand carving in stone diamond cutters and diamond grits work the stone faster.

but naturally there's a price trade off .

my tumbler will do 6 pounds at a time...(2) 3 pound batches...still considered small.

Aaaw. Is it any consolation that you actually live close enough to the ocean to gather your own sea glass? I don't have a single bit of it to my name because I live in the butthole of the country. I need to order some online though, I admire the stuff too much to not have a collection of my own. But it seems like cheating if you don't gather it yourself.

i made a present for both an ex gf and my mom a few months back with some sea glass

i used these little mini class bottles like an inch and a half in length tops.
i filled it up half way with Sand from the local beach where i spent a lot of time with both the ex and mom. Filled the other half with ocean water from same local beach.
Then crushed some beach glass with a a hammer, blue and green, and put the tiny pieces in the bottle.
then put a cap on it with a string for a necklace.

came out pretty well. little mini home sweet home beach in a necklace.

I got it for her before she went back to school.
Thought it was pretty smooth lol. B)
