I gave it one more feeble chance and we hung out one more time. He of course, kept "not getting it" and kept making advances and bargains and pleas while I held to my refusal to lead him on.
Then, as worst case scenario occurred, he was continuing to be obsessive, childish and irritating to no avail. That was the go at trying to be friends, and it failed full-on. I lost any will to do so and my bullshit capacity weight was exceeded.
I again told him why he should to cease to think I was going to date him, in a more precise but considerate way. I began to feel uncomfortable with the spotlight on me and all the continuous "why nots" but answered his questions and went back home mentally exhausted.

Meanwhile, he calls up all his friends to bitch, blaming them for "getting his hopes up", drinks a bunch of whiskey, goes around his neighborhood knocking mailboxes out of yards, takes some pills, calls me up with a combination of cussing and sobbing while confessing love for me. Then he got arrested after a guy called the cops about the mailbox massacre.

I wasn't there for that tantrum, but I'm embarrassed and feel genuinely sorry for him now.

EDIT: he also punched his mom in the face.

He's an attention whore who is trying (and may succeed) in guilting you into being with him.

Hes a manipulative child who thinks if he acts like an ass, you'll at least come around so he won't harm himself, or tear other peoples shit up.

You need to hand him the knife, so to speak, let him know that his actions are whats turning you off to him. Let him know you could give a rats ass about what he does to 'get over you' because you really don't put that much thought into it.

Then, move on...

No reason you have to interact with him is there? You all don't live on the same street or anything, right?

May take awhile, may take ten minutes, if you know you have zero desire to pursue any kind of relationship then don't fuck around and just quit him like a bad habit.

You're right. Certain people are worth no second chance. I gave him the courtesy I would have wanted if the tables were turned, but it backfires when you're dealing with severely damaged goods.
