Art as a Universal Philosophy

Posted 10-25-2010 at 10:42 PM by SmokeaJoint

I've been taking a class, Philosophy of Aesthetics. great class, really opened my mind to other cultures that I otherwise had no ability to understand. We have studied the San of Africa, The Australian Aborigines, and the Inuit to name a few. Something that I've come to realize is, even though we are so different from these indigenous cultures in most every way, we have art in common. In studying these peoples, I have gained an understanding of them as human beings through their differing views on aesthetic philosophy.

These cultures, they can understand art as a way to enhance and beautify existence. They have beautiful music which seems to sing to the primordial self, and deeply ingrained rituals in which even in modern art, we can still see the vestiges of. They see art, on some levels at least, to be a gateway to the spiritual self, as a way to let the supernatural touch reality. They also display their innate human understanding and intellect. For instance, the Aborigines have made paintings of animals in a sort of an "x ray" fashion where the internal organs and major bones are clearly and accurately rendered. The Inuit people have drawn maps for explorers showing geological features stretching for thousands of miles, and extremely accurately too.

I've heard tell that math may be considered the universal Language, but for these people, who have little concept of mathematics, this appears to not be true. I propose art to be the true universal language. Accessible to all, understood by all, and an attainable skill for all. Thanks for reading my rant.
