The Risk of Medical Marijuana

Posted 04-18-2011 at 09:49 AM by SmokeaJoint

The accepted use of marijuana as medical treatment has the potential to be one of the biggest setbacks in the legalization effort. Why is this? I'll try to explain.

Let us think back on a time when opium was a major drug for the masses. Man was beginning to realize that besides the potential for abuse, there was a potential of medical use for this plant byproduct. (Sound familiar so far?) Although opium latex could be smoked to achieve pain relief, medical research instead separated the latex into its constituent parts, found which compounds did what, and put them in pill form. However, heroin and opium remain very illegal.

I fear the same for marijuana. The medical profession regards the current ingestion methods of cannabis either too unhealthy or too unregulated. There isn't an exact dose of THC, CBD, etc in each bong hit. Potency also varies by strain and by growth factors. There's a potential for contamination by mold, bacteria, insects, and even fertilizers still in the plant matter.

What I see happening for cannabis is already taking place. As the pharmaceutical companies begin to understand cannabinoids better and their function for treatment, more products like Marinol and Sativex will be released. They will isolate, concentrate, and encapsulate the magic and freedom of cannabis into a pill, and our beloved plant will remain illegal.

Good point but why haven't they done this yet? I know they can move as fast as they decide to move. Still you may be correct. Thanks for sharing.... gl on 927.

Due to continuing issues with legality, medicinal research has only recently been granted access to plant based cannabinoids. This had a marked effect of slowing research efforts which would allow for the above explained exploitation of cannabis. Oy that's kind of a mouthful to say out loud lol.
