Butane Hash (Honey) Oil Extraction
Okey guys... I recently made a batch of BHO and it turned out amazing, and the best thing is I only used about an ounce of stems and leaf (mainly stems).
I used two cans of butane, one Vector and the other was some normal brand in a white can from Walgreen's. The Vector left nothing but oil while the Walgreen's crap left some kind of white residue in the end. I scraped it up and smoked it nonetheless, and it tastes like hash, not butane, so no harm done, but I still didn't like that color change. These brands have been recommended. Quote:
So... Anyway... You need: *-* About an ounce (or more) of (bud/shake/leaf/trim/stemmage). *-* A bottle or two of butane. (300+ml) (350ml are recommended per ounce of plant matter, more will ensure all compounds are extracted.) *-* A pyrex baking dish. *-* Some kind of piping, approx. 7 X 1.5 inches. I used PVC, and so has everyone I've ever known, but there are a few sites on the net that recommend some kinds of steel or galvanized tubing, for fear that solvents may extract molecules of plastic. I wouldn't know, nor do I care. *-* A coffee filter. *-* An electric drill and a wee little drill bit (the hole drilled should be just the perfect size for the thin part of the butane nozzle to fit in). PVC is cheap and easy to get. I got mine at Lowe's. Even cut it to the right size in the store (they had measuring tape conveniently placed next to it, lol). You also need to buy 2 PVC endcaps (1.5 inch). For 5 bucks I got way more PVC than I needed... Ten feet... 1. Once you get home, get to work. Begin by drilling a single hole in the middle of on endcap, and about 5 or 6 holes in the other (centered). The one with more holes is the bottom to your contraption. 2. Put a coffee filter in the bottom endcap (to avoid the escape of plant matter) and snugly and securely fit it onto your contraption. 3. Grind up all plant matter (I used a tiny handheld grinder, but for larger amounts it may be quicker and easier to use scissors). 4. Pour the plant matter into your contraption. An ounce (+) of well ground stems and leaves nearly filled my contraption all the way, without packing it down (perfect. you don't want to pack it down). 5. Affix the top cap (single hole) and take your contraption, butane, and pyrex baking dish outside. 6. MAKE SURE YOU'RE OUTSIDE! BUTANE FUMES WILL POOL INDOORS, POISONING YOU AND/OR BLOWING UP YOUR F*CKIN HOUSE! 7. Safety goggle are recommended, but this process is so simple and takes so little time I forgot to buy some... 8. Hold your contraption above your baking dish (pyrex, remember). Insert the nozzle into the (single) hole at the top and depress. Hold it down until the hissing stops completely, remove the nozzle, and as the dripping from the bottom slows to one drip per second (or less) begin lightly tapping on the contraption, or blowing in the top hole, to force out the last bit of liquid. 9. You may want to do step 8 again with a new can, just to make sure you're getting your money's worth. 10. Allow the dish to sit for a while, give it time to evaporate. A little bit of warmth (like body heat or a warm fan, not fire) goes a long way, and can greatly speed up the evaporation process. 11. Scrape up the golden goo with a razor blade and enjoy! (How you handle/enjoy it is up to you. I still don't know how we moved the goo around. It leaves itself behind on everything it comes in contact with!) I have not yet done step 12, but the process is sound and the end result looks MUCH easier to work with. Quote:

The preparation takes longer than the entire process! Be sure to clean up your mess and have everything (your contraption) clean for next time. I'm not sure if it's recommended to reuse your PVC contraption, but I'm going to keep using mine. You may want to replace yours each time you do this... Thanks!
BHO is sooooo June but thanks for the tip. Now I got one for you... Step 12. Scrape your golden goo into the middle of your pyrex dish, place dish over simmering water to keep oil in a semi liquid state and begin to whip the oil. Do not stop until you see a physical change in the properties of the oil, it will become lighter in color and more putty like in consistency. Since you are using trash to make the oil it will get a light green color and look like ear wax, which is why it's called 'ear wax'. If you make the oil with nugs and buds of fine strains you can keep whipping it until it becomes a light tan color and looks almost like wet beach sand. It is fairly dry to the touch and can be handled quite easily. This is called 'budder' and due to a change in the chemical compound (that may or may not actually happen, the jury is out) called decarboxylization the CBD's turn to THC so the potency of the oil can increase tenfold. So yeah, again thanks for the tip but a whole bunch of us have gone that extra mile. You should try it! You should also double your butane and stay away from domestic brands, try cigar shops for butane 5X refined.

No the endcaps fit themselves quite snug. In fact, just by pushing them on by hand I couldn't get them off after the process was over. I had to use a hammer to knock the pieces off!
As for elastic, I wouldn't know for sure but it seems like there'd be the possibility of disintegrating molecules of elastic into your hash. Like I said, I'm not sure, but it just doesn't sound tantalizing to me... If someone knows whether butane destroys elastic that'd be nice information to have. Until then I recommend a normal paper coffee filter or a paper towel.

I have a custom glass piece that I made, it's an oil candle, large opening on one end and a hole the size of the butane tip on the other. We hold the Mr. Coffee coffee filters on with plain old rubber bands and when we're done we scrape the residual oil from the filter while it is still frozen and add it to what's on the plate as quick as you can.

So I did a little searching and I found this...
![]() The tall one is probably 10 inches long, that's the one we use most, the middle one we've used but it's just a bit too small. We used a diamond burr and drilled a hole in the bottom just big enough for the butane can tip, having a dental lab handy is cool. We shoved about seven grams of leaves and stems in the fat end and ran two cans of butane through and came out with about 3.5 grams of oil which processed out to about 2 grams of ear wax. We bought the candles, the pyrex pie plate and the glass bowl for about $5 at the thrift store. Coffee filters are inexpensive, natural or unbleached filters work best as they take the cold and wet without tearing. Plain old rubber bands to hold them on the end. Ahhh, good times...

That's amazing! I've never seen one of those uncandles before. Looks great.
We should definitely take pharmgirl's advice and make a sticky with lots of pretty pictures for the folks at home.

ive seen it done with just a mason jar. two small holes in the top, one to vent one for the butane. Seems like a helluva lot less work, considering you can make it in about a minute with a pocket knife.
Just my two cents.

Ummmm, neh. I think you might not be too sure of what you speak, the butane strips the THC from the plant matter so you need some place for the butane to go carrying the THC, that's what the bottom plate is for. You need to start from one side and end up on the other, just filling a Mason jar with butane and weed doesn't sound like it'll work, it has to pass thru the plant matter. Just my $.05 (inflation)

well......I poured the remaining butane back...and it wanted to stay inside the gadget!
luckily I had a tad left in the can.....i'm not convinced I did good. I'm noticing a sticky frost on the pyrex...but nothing really to speak of.

The butane will 'boil off' leaving the oil behind, butane boils at about -0.5°c so it may have been slow to evaporate, it was evaporating.
You can do this inside in cold climes if you wish just make sure to have some type of positive ventilation to the outside (a fan blowing out an open window/door is good) just make sure you're close enough to the fan for it to be effective.

to Pharm- even just rubbing the bottom of the dish with your hand is enough to help accelerate the evaporation. Just watch out for the fumes!

The butane strips the THC from the plant matter and carries it out to the waiting pie plate, the butane evaporates away leaving the THC. The butane has no effect on the THC however further refining over mild heat may cause a little understood process called decarboxylization (not to be confused with decarboxylation) which changes CBD's into THC which can be absorbed from smoking. As it stands CBD's attach to different receptors by ingestion which is where that mellow 'body high' comes in. Eaten marijuana also has potent analgesic and anti-inflammatory qualities as well but you have to ask Pharm Girl all about that. Heating pad is fine, we have always used the 'double boiler' method with a hot plate (no open flame kiddies) and a pot of simmering water under the pyrex pie plate after you run the cans. Just the pot of water while running the cans, no accidents. You can also set it on the counter and forget about it for as long as you like, it will get harder to deal with as it cools but you can just put it back over the warm water to let it get viscous again. Like I said before, it boils at -0.5°c so unless the house is below freezing it will evaporate.
