drug test for gov't job?

So i've been given a start date (Aug 30) for a government job (entry level engineering position in air force) and I never signed anything saying that this was a Testing Designated Position (TDP), nor have I signed ANY sheet or paper that had any mention of drug testing, it only required a secret security clearance. The HR guy said he'd be in touch with me soon with more details but I didn't know if this just meant where to report to, ID card, etc. If i've already been given a start date and there's been no mention of a drug test so far (i've been in touch with them for almost a month.) what are the odds of having one?

also, at what stage of the hiring process would this happen... since I already have a start date would it happen on the first day?

i would think they would have done it during the hiring process. perhaps you wont be getting one...

that seems unlikely as its an engineering position and on top of that a government job. it might be good to ask around with other people who have been hired in that position or a similar position.

good luck to you

yeah they acted pretty clueless... although from the research i've done if a government job is going to drug test you as a condition of employment it will be on the offer/pre-employment paperwork

just make sure your behavior doesn't become a problem because gov't employees can be subject to a probable cause test

Best of luck to ya, sounds like any worry is a small one by now. Its not hard at all to get a false negative on a test there days though so no sweat.

When I did IT work contracted out to the Air Force I was *supposed* to be tested, but never was. Though if you do not have a Secret Security Clearance at this time, during the course of the investigation you may have to take one.

EDIT: Also if they don't bring it up, neither should you...

thanks, KaptNemo. I haven't brought it up when speaking to them, but it's just been making me wonder. I assumed that I had already obtained the clearance since a secret clearance is pretty much a background check from what i've heard.
