little black flies, but no leaf damage... WTF???
got these little black flies everywhere, but my plants show no sign of damage anywhere... about the size of a fruitfly, maybe just a bit longer, and they look a bit thinner than a fruitfly. lil' cocksuckers are everywhere... Indoor grow, I water every other day, using seaweed extract and fish emulsion, along with dried blood and bonemeal. could they be eatin the blood and bonemeal?
I don't get it. Also sprayed the little bastards with ortho vegetable bug spray, and it didn't hurt them a bit.... any clues? I could try to get a macro photo of one, but the're pretty small... |

Could be fungus gnats or some other type.
To be safe, i'd get some neem oil, mix with a wetting agent, such as dish soap (not antibacterial) and spray both sides of all leaves. Better safe than sorry eh? |

here are some extreme closeups of the little fuckers...
these things can be bad news, eh? the plants look super healthy... nice and green, compact growth, no wilt or leaf twisting... I guess the maggots, or larvae can eat on the root structures, or even introduce root fungus. how to get rid of them? Last edited by newbiegreengrow; 09-03-2007 at 07:47 PM. |

The soil is a mixture of soils that I bought from a very reputable business here...
some seaweed compost, some manure, some shellfish compost, vermiculite, and sphagnum moss. I have no idea about sterilization, but my immediate guess would be no. I'm thinking that they might have been in the soil... so you're thinking that they are NOT the fungus gnats? |

hmmmm...
guess what else I found? In checkingeverything out, I noticed a little yellow spot on one leaf on one plant in the rear of my room... Spider mites. I'm thinking that all of these little critters could have been brought in with all of the organic soils and composts... I douched everything down with Safer's spray yesterday afternoon. I'll keep you guys posted... |
