First Try with Ebb & Flow

Hey guys,

I just noticed that it has been 17 months since I last logged in, wow!

Well I am back and going to be working on a new grow. I am going to try out and ebb and flow system for my first time. Since my last grow I have done a few upgrades...

Replaced flouros and 150w HPS with a single 600w Digital HPS in a sealed reflector with both an intake and exhaust fan on the cooling lines. I am now constantly monitoring my pH and ppm levels twice a daily with the addition of a Hanna GroCheck. This is something that I never did before and have no clue what difference it was making. I have also replaced my DWC buckets with a 3x3 ebb and flow table. I have plans for (25) of these little pots to sit on it 5 wide and 5 deep.

I am currently using the same nutrients as last time (FoxFarm) and will be switching to a new blend for flower this time. I do have a question about the medium that I should be using. Is hydroton the best in these pots? The store clerk assures me that it is however a mentor of mine tells me CoCoTek.

Any advise?

Hey guys, a little more about the grow...

I have started out with 3 mothers (i hope) in a DWC since I have full confidence in myself with that setup. The girls are 4 weeks old today and are doing well, pictures to come soon. They will hopefully give me enough clones to fill my tray. I will only be leaving the clones in fox farm nuts until they are 30 days old. They will then be switched into this other stuff I was sold on. I think I will be sticking with hydroton as my medium due to my familiarity with it.

I am hoping for clones to be taken with the next 2-3 weeks and they will veg for another 4 after that before flowering. So that is 6-7 more weeks of veg, but I hope that it will pay off. Right now the only problem that I have is keeping the room warm. This is nice since I have always had to battle the heat. Right now I am maintaining a temp of 67-72. ph is perfectly set to 6.3 with a ppm level of 630. The only low number I have is my humidity, it hovers right around 20%. Is this going to cause any problems?

It will cause the plants to put forth more effort into hydration, but if other factors are good it should be a very slight decrease in production.

DWC? deep water culture right? Is that where the roots hang in the water and there are bubblers etc?

Well maybe I can do something with a humidifier. It seems to be the heater drying out the air. You are right about the DWC. Here is my last grow log using DWC.

$13, cant beat that considering I paid $129 for a 3x3 at the shop.

My main concern with the EF setup is that the roots have nowhere to hide from the light if they come out the side or bottom of the buckets. How does this work?

Also, is 25 going to be too many to try on a 3x3 tray in a 4x4 room?

Smallarms, you state that the tray above is ready with 24 5" sites. Would you actually try to flower 24 plants that close together and in those size pots?

There is not much yet to take pictures of. Here is a picture of the 3 mothers to be in their DWC setup.

Air cooled reflectors ftw!

You did hydro without checking pH? You crazy gardner you!

Excellent thread, will be watching with interest.

Tell me about it, that was my first through third grows and this will be my fourth. Hey it worked before, so I'm back to learn/show the difference it will make when you pay attention to the details.

I can definitely put the stretch on these girls. Right now their fluorescent light is about 2" above them. Raising the light should provide the stretch?

I would much rather go with the best 16 clones out of the 25 that I plan to take, we will just watch and see where it goes. Appreciate the advise!

Mom's look good and you seem to have your set up dialed in.

29% RH isnt ideal, but isnt a real problem either. As the plants grow, so will the RH%. Maybe a wet towel or a bucket of water will bring it up to 40%. Give em a coupla weeks growth and your RH will improve.

64F lights on : You could raise that one a little bit to 75F maybe..

Whats your lights-off temps btw?
